Giving commuters a new way of connecting

The need

The need

Commuters in Toronto need more fast and reliable transit options. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will carry people across the city more quickly than the existing bus service, while easing traffic congestion.

Overview

The Crosstown project includes 19 km of light-rail transit running both underground and at-grade, along with a short, elevated section. There are 15 underground stations, 10 stops and a maintenance and storage facility for the vehicle fleet.

The need

Our role

We’re part of the consortium awarded the contract to design, construct, maintain and partially finance this important project.

Our design work

Our design work

We designed the single span integral abutment bridge that provides main access to the maintenance and storage facility and allows rail vehicles to pass underneath. We also designed two new bridges outside of the maintenance facility.

Rehabilitation work

Rehabilitation work

To accommodate the new median-running dual LRT tracks, we designed a variety of rehabilitations and upgrades to existing multi-span arterial road bridges.

Prioritizing safety

Prioritizing safety

The bridges include many safety features, such as the abutment bridge’s internal crash walls and stabilized fill in case of train impact.

A whole new way to connect

The Crosstown will give Torontonians a whole new way to connect with both sides of their city. And it will do so quickly and efficiently; the light-rail transit line will move people up to 60% faster than existing bus services and handle more than 10 times as many passengers. Operations are expected begin in 2021.
