The need

The need

The Champlain Bridge is one of Canada’s busiest, with more than 50 million vehicles passing over it each year. The bridge has become degraded and can no longer accommodate increased traffic, so the decision was made to replace it.

Overview

The new Champlain Bridge is a 3.4-kilometre crossing over the St. Lawrence River that will replace the existing structure. It is designed to be a gateway into Montreal, with significant architectural input included in the project design criteria.

Our role

SNC-Lavalin and its consortium partners are tasked with the design, construction, financing, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of the New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project as part of a public-private partnership agreement with the Government of Canada.

Compressed construction schedule

Compressed construction schedule

Our careful and innovative project planning includes strategies such as preparing permit applications in advance and opting for multiple offsite fabrication operations and on-site precast yard to help meet the biggest challenge on the project: the 42-month schedule.

Built to last

Built to last

Durability is a key design consideration, with the client requiring a 125-year service life. The bridge incorporates high-performance materials and modernized seismic design criteria. The bridge will allow the crossing of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) transit project now underway.

An iconic landmark

The New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project and its impressive cable-stay will become an iconic landmark. We’re proud that our work on this project is contributing to the quality of life in Montreal for generations to come. The bridge is expected to open before the end of 2018.
